It’s fairly common for one’s wine-drinking habits to evolve with the changing of the seasons.
During the late fall and winter months, many turn to heavy, higher-in-alcohol wines — primarily reds — because they provide comfort and warmth.
As the weather begins to warm up in the springtime, many palates prefer lighter, brighter, less-alcoholic and more refreshing wines — mostly whites… but not entirely.
Here are five types of wine that are perfect for springtime sipping and food pairing…
1. Sauvignon Blanc.
The perfect companion to almost any type or preparation of fish, especially white fish. It even works with tartar sauce.
2. Gruner Veltliner.
Like Sauvignon Blanc, this is one of the few varieties that can be enjoyed with a salad topped with almost any type of dressing. P.S.: It also pairs beautifully with wienerschnitzel and Austrian-style potatoes.
3. Pinot Grigio.
It’s time to switch from pasta with a red sauce and a glass of Chianti to pasta with a white sauce and a glass of Pinot Grigio. Now, that’s Italian — spring style!
4. Rosé.
Think of it as the bridge between red wine and white — possessing all the freshness of a white wine with all the fruit flavor of a red. Great for sipping and people watching, or with a charcuterie board.
5. Zinfandel.
For those who absolutely love red wine to the exclusion of all other types, a fruitful, spicy California Zin is a great choice — especially when you fire up the grill.
Of course, you could always adopt the “anything goes” mindset and just drink what you like throughout the year. There’s nothing wrong with that at all.
But if you’re adjusting your diet and embracing lighter fare, you’ll enhance the experience by also embracing lighter-styled wines.
